The beautiful city of Antananarivo perches on a hillside and exudes a mystical charm and an air of being lost in time. It is a city of contrasting moods best experienced by exploring its rambling streets. Antananarivo’s preserved architecture is an amazing mix influenced by tradition, missionary fervour and brief colonial past.
Visit the Lost Palace & Royal Rova in Antananarivo which was once a symbol of hope and unity, a reminder to the Malagasy people of their proud heritage. Walk to the Lost Palace and Royal Rova along the maze of alleys and stairs linking the lower and upper city. Imagine the former grandeur when Madagascar’s Kings use to dwell here, the beautiful summer palace of the queen, the tomb complex containing the mortal remains of kings and Malagasy people, sadly destroyed by a devastating fire. All that remained was the original stone entrance and the stonework of the church. The Rova is now a museum displaying the salvaged collection of antiques, historical documents and royal artefacts.
The city views from the Lost Palace and Rova is absolutely spectacular as you take in the redbrick topsy-turvy houses scattered along the hills, the beauty of the lake and beyond to the rice paddies; the spirit of days gone by envelopes you as you ponder on the optimism that were in the hearts of all Malagasy people. Major reconstructions aided from countries from all over the world are taking place to restore the Lost Palace and Rova to its former glory and hopefully it will retain its value of being one of the most interesting places to visit whilst exploring the extraordinary city of Antananarivo.
